Assumption of Mary Parish Celebration!

On August 15th the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary.  The Church teaches that at the end of her earthly life Mary was assumed, or taken up to heaven, body and soul.  While we all hope for the reunification of our bodies and souls at the end of time, God gave Mary the special privilege of experiencing the glorification of her body at the moment her earthly life ended. This feast day is so special and important that the Church has declared it a Holy Day of Obligation for Catholics. This feast day is particularly significant for the parishioners of St. Mary’s. Every Catholic Church is given a patron, and the feast day of that patron is a liturgical solemnity for that church. Solemnities are the highest rank of liturgical celebration in the Church, and should be celebrated enthusiastically. For churches named after Mary without a specific title (for example, Mary of the Immaculate Conception), the Church assigns the Assumption as their patronal feast. This makes the Assumption our patronal solemnity, and a day for lots of celebration!

This year, St. Mary’s is celebrating our patronal feast with two Holy Day Masses and our first annual parish-wide potluck after the 5:30pm Mass! We hope that you’ll join us in celebrating this great feast day!
